We start with a public safety announcement: school has started again, so please be extra careful when driving and keep an eye open for the little ones who are walking to school and back.

Bethany College is offering the community a chance to meet the fall sports athletes and hear from the coaches on Sunday August 31st at the Stroble-Gibson center on the Bethany campus. The event starts at 4pm, and in addition, there will be plenty of watermelon available. The event is free and is open to the public.

Be sure to check out the Farmer’s Market in the back of the Old Blacksmith shop on Main Street in Lindsborg. The Lindsborg Farmer’s Market has new hours, and they are now open from 1-4pm on Wednesdays, and from 8 till 5 on Saturdays. They have a nice selection of local produce, meat, eggs, honey and more!

Next Friday, the Smoky Valley High School football team plays the first game on the newly renovated Anderson Field. Be sure to come out and support our team as they play their first home game on a new field.

The Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg is pleased to announce a new show, Views of the Flint Hills, featuring oils and acrylics by Mary Binford Miller. The show begins September 2nd and runs through October 26th.

Next week, starting September 5th, Max Penner will be the artist in residence at the Red Barn Studio in Lindsborg. Max is a retired Hallmark illustrator and in addition to his work in graphic design and communication he now does drawings and paintings. During his time at the Redbarn he will be working in pastels and acrylics, concentrating on landscapes.

If you love fresh, juicy Colorado peaches, you’re in luck! The Methodist Church on south Main in Lindsborg is selling Colorado peaches today from 1-3 pm in the church parking lot.

Speaking of fresh fruit, be sure to check out the Farmer’s Market in the back of the Old Blacksmith shop on Main Street in Lindsborg. The Lindsborg Farmer’s Market has new hours, and they are now open from 1-4pm on Wednesdays, and from 8 till 5 on Saturdays. They have a nice selection of local produce, meat, eggs, honey and more!

The Red Barn Studio has announced that Sonja Brase-Martin is the artist-in-residence through August 29th. Tomorrow, Sunday August 24th, there will be a reception at the Red Barn from 2-4pm. In addition, Sonja will be holding a pair of drawing workshops during her stay; contact the Red Barn Studio for details.

And Bethany Home is continuing its tradition of hosting works by local artists. During the month of August, paintings by Gloria Zachgo will be on display for your viewing pleasure.

Finally, tonight’s the night of the big street dance in downtown Lindsborg. Lindsborg Live is hosting King Midas and the Mufflers for your listening and dancing pleasure. But that’s not all!

Main street will be blocked off starting at 5pm. Local restaurants are serving special street dance menus. Then, at 6, the children’s tricycle and wagon decorating begins. At 6:30, there will be a parade featuring the freshly decorated wagons and trikes. Around 8pm, King Midas and the Mufflers take the stage and will perform until 11pm.

That’s tonight, at the Lindsborg Street Dance. Food and fun starts at 6pm and the dance runs from 8 until 11pm. The whole evening should be lots of fun! Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy a cool evening in downtown Lindsborg.

Swimmers, today and tomorrow are the last two days the Lindsborg pool will be open for the season; it will be drained on Monday, August 18th.

Imagine being on a boat that was attacked and sunk by enemy fire. Further imagine that you then had to spend a month as a prisoner of war before being released! Well, this really happened to the Danielson family, back in 1941. This Sunday you’re invited to hear a presentation about their experiences, starting at 1pm at the Messiah Church in Lindsborg.

At the Red Barn Studio, Linda Wisely is the artist-in-residence through August 17th, working in acrylic and pastel. Tomorrow, August 10th, the Red Barn Studio will host a reception for Linda at 2pm. On August 11th and 12th she will be teaching a 2 day pastel workshop; contact the Red Barn for more information.

Today is the day motorcycle enthusiasts from across the midwest will be gathering in Lindsborg for the 2nd annual Thor’s Roar Motorcycle Rally. If any of you are listening, welcome to Lindsborg!

Tomorrow, Sunday August 10th, the Bethany Home is hosting an ice cream social from 6:30 until 8:30 pm. This is the 20th ice cream social, and there will be great entertainment featuring the Flatland String Band from Wichita. There will be plenty of good cake and cold ice cream, as well as plenty of shade, so come spend an enjoyable evening at the Bethany Home Ice Cream Social.

Today and tomorrow are the last 2 days of the Bethany Blitz. No, it’s not football related, but working together as a team volunteers will be painting various Bethany buildings. If you’d like to participate, call 227-3380, ext 8270.
