Little Sweden USA

A blog about Lindsborg

Irv Gordon and his multi-million mile Volvo were in Lindsborg recently as the Volvo Car Club held its annual gathering in conjunction with Lindsborg’s Midsummer’s celebration last June. Juliana found this press release and I wanted to pass it along; Lindsborg is in some good company in this listing! Here’s the quote about Lindsborg; the full article follows below the fold:

Lindsborg, Kan. (a.k.a. Little Sweden) “Lindsborg is a real taste of Sweden hidden 150 miles west of Kansas City. The town is beautiful, neat as a pin and the townsfolk are just as friendly as can be. Swedish pancakes and other specialties are served in almost every restaurant in town. Swedish Midsommer celebrations with Swedish folk dancing take place in June each year. Don’t forget to stop by the bison ranch nearby and check out the wildlife.”

August is known as one of the hottest months of the year, and in Lindsborg that doesn’t just mean the weather. Today is the Lindsborg Classic Car Show, next weekend is the Thor’s Roar motorcyle rally and August 23rd is the date of the Lindsborg Live street dance featuring King Midas and the Mufflers.

Of course, the arts scene is always happening in Lindsborg. The Red Barn Studio is pleased that artist Shin-hee Chin of McPherson has returned as the artist-in-residence through tomorrow, August 3rd. Shin-hee will be continuing her work on portrait quilts during her stay at the Red Barn. And then, starting August 4th, Linda Wisely will be in residence through August 17th, working in acrylic and pastel. On August 10th, the Red Barn Studio will host a reception for Linda at 2pm. On August 11th and 12th she will be teaching a 2 day pastel workshop; contact the Red Barn for more information.

If you are interested in classic cars, you’ll want to attend the Lindsborg Classic Car show today, August 2nd. Held in beautiful (and shady!) Swensson Park, this is a great chance to see a great selection of classic cars. Judges will select winners in a wide variety of categories, including the humorous, “most likely to be stopped” category.

Next Saturday, August 9th, motorcycle enthusiasts from across the midwest will be gathering in Lindsborg for the 2nd annual Thor’s Roar Motorcycle Rally. This is an all day affair starting with special biker breakfasts at many local restaurants, a vending area in the BofA south parking lot, a Wild Dala scavenger hunt, a bike show at the Lindsborg State Bank’s parking lot, a Poker Run through the beautiful Smoky Valley and finishing with a dance from 7 to 9:30 at the Hemslojd, featuring the band Nostalgia. And that’s only a quick overview of everything that’s happening on August 9th!

One last note, mark your calendars for August 23rd! That’s when Lindsborg Live hosts King Midas and the Mufflers for a street dance in downtown Lindsborg. Food and fun starts at 5pm and the dance runs from 8 until 11pm.

On Friday, we attended Lindsborg’s theater under the stars, Broadway RFD. This year’s show was State Fair, the charming musical by Rogers and Hammerstein featuring the adventures of the Frake family as they seek fame and love at the 1946 Iowa State Fair.

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about this choice, but within moments of the show’s beginning I found myself totally captivated! I forgot how much I enjoy musicals, plus the actors’ performances were uniformly very strong; to single out any one cast member would beunfair to the others, though I do have to comment on how hilarious the judge was. She cracked up the audience with her rendition of a judge who greatly enjoyed the mincemeat that contained Pa’s (and Ma’s) special ingredient, brandy.

Broadway RFD is the longest running outdoor theater in Kansas and celebrates its 50th anniversary next year with the classinc musical, Annie Get Your Gun.

I took almost 200 photos, but given the low light levels, many of them turned out blurry or very blurry. The best have been posted here: Flickr Broadway RFD set, and I’ve also created a Broadway RFD photo slide show for your enjoyment.

Looks like July is a good month for art lovers in Lindsborg. Representing the peforming arts is live theater in the form of Broadway RFD, and there are at least 3 places with new art exhibitions on display in July.

Starting at the Bethany Home, area photographer Kathy Shogren will display some of her award winning nature photographs during the month of July. Included in the display are wonderful photos of landscapes, close-ups of insects and flowers.

Next we head over to the Red Barn Studio, where Roger Gerberding is the artist-in-residence in early July. Roger, who is from Council Bluffs Iowa, is returning to the Red Barn for his 2nd year. He will be teaching a pastel workshop on Saturday, July 12th. Contact the Red Barn at 227-2217 for more information.

And over at the Sandzen Gallery, artist Anne Horton presents Paper and Paint, a series of new works by the artist. The exhibition runs through August 24th, and tomorrow, Sunday July 6th, there will be a reception for Anne and guest artist David Kinder from 2-4pm at the Sandzen Gallery.

Broadway RFD. The name itself is a contrast between city and country and highlights the best of both worlds present at a Broadway RFD performance, high quality theater in a comfortable, small-town setting.

And congratulations to everyone who participated in the Lindsborg Tomorrow Wellness Trek! The trek ran for the month of June and over 75 people participated; winners will be celebrated at an upcoming event later this summer.
